Sankamap Metals Inc. (SCU:CSE’SKMPF:OTCMKTS) resumed drilling at its 4,500-hectare Kuma property in the Solomon Islands, where drill hole KU26-001 had advanced to a depth of 840 meters and intersected multiple zones of mineralization and alteration between 250 meters and 840 meters.
The company said the planned operational pause allowed its technical team to integrate geological observations from initial drilling into a refined geological model. Targeted surface sampling was also completed during the break to generate additional geological information and refine priority drill targets, with assays from that sampling pending.
Assays for the first 559 meters of KU26-001, representing 365 samples, had been submitted and were awaiting results. The company reported that drilling intersected multiple intervals of hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks containing abundant anhydrite veining and disseminated to locally abundant pyrite mineralization.
According to the company, this alteration was interpreted as representing an oxidized magmatic-hydrothermal system consistent with the upper levels of a porphyry-related environment. The observed alteration and sulphide assemblages may represent part of a pyrite-rich halo or lithocap above or adjacent to a concealed porphyry copper-gold system at depth. The company said additional drilling and analytical results were required to determine the relationship of these observations to potential economic mineralization.
Surface exploration at Kuma included rock samples collected within the interpreted lithocap alteration zone at the drill site that returned up to 3.0 g/t gold. Historical grab samples yielded up to 13.5 g/t gold and 11.7% copper.
The fully funded 2,000-meter to 3,000-meter drill program was designed to systematically test multiple high-priority targets across the project’s two-kilometer-long lithocap. The initial program was also designed to test and delineate near-surface and deeper mineralization and provide the first systematic evaluation of the project’s copper-gold potential.
“Operating in the Solomon Islands presents unique logistical challenges, but our experienced team has continued to execute the program safely and efficiently,” Chief Executive Officer John Florek said. “Strong relationships with local landowners and government stakeholders have been instrumental in keeping the project on schedule, and we look forward to advancing the program and sharing further results as drilling continues.”
